In short
- One Ottawa firm prints $700–880 for a 1-bedroom move and $1,050–1,590 for a 2-bedroom.
- The village of Eastview became Vanier in 1969 and joined Ottawa in 2001; Montreal Road runs through the middle.
- Stairs are billed: $30 per flight of seven at one firm, a walk-up fee from six steps at another.
- Vanier is east of the Rideau River, so moves to Sandy Hill or Lowertown cross a bridge.

What Vanier is
Across the Rideau River from Vanier lie Lowertown and Sandy Hill, with Manor Park and New Edinburgh to the north and the Gloucester suburbs to the east. The place started out in 1908 as the village of Eastview, gained town status in 1913 and city status in 1963, and was renamed Vanier in 1969. It joined Ottawa in 2001. The 2021 census counted 17,757 residents, below the 1961 peak of 24,555. Montreal Road runs through the middle.
Apartments, stairs and elevators
Wikipedia describes Vanier housing as a mix: subsidized and self-financed units, new condominiums and infill. For a crew the building decides the work:
- Walk-ups. Every box goes up or down by hand. One Ottawa firm treats six steps or more as a walk-up and may charge extra from there. Another bills $30 for each flight of seven.
- Elevator buildings. The property manager books the lift, sets the hours and may ask for a deposit. A late slot cuts the day short. See condo moving for the booking routine.
- Ground-floor and basement units. Faster, but the street entrance and the parking decide the carry.
Put the floor number, the stair count and the elevator rule in the request. The crew size follows from them, and so does the price. The apartment moving page covers the general case.
What it costs
One Ottawa firm prints typical totals of $700–880 for a 1-bedroom move and $1,050–1,590 for a 2-bedroom. Another starts a two-mover crew with a 20 ft truck at $129 an hour. Hours for each unit size are on the apartment moving page. Each firm sets its own numbers, and the company that calls prices your move after it hears the details.
Distances are short, so minimum hours and the travel charge matter most. Read the hourly rates guide for how they are billed.
July 1 and the summer rate
On the page we opened, Move-Ottawa Movers showed a July and August special for two movers and a truck at $149 an hour, minimum 2.5 hours, so ask whether a summer rate applies. The July 1 guide covers the busiest date.
Across the Rideau River
Sandy Hill and Lowertown lie across the river, a short drive from Montreal Road. On a short hop, ask the company whether the clock starts at its yard or at your door, and where it stops. For the downtown side see Centretown. For a move to the suburbs, see Gloucester.
Parking and winter
Vanier’s side streets follow the City by-law: three daytime hours where no signs are posted, 9 m clear of a corner, 3 m clear of a hydrant. Snow-season parking bans are on winter moving.
Your rights
Get three written estimates, as Ontario.ca advises, and keep the signed contract: anything above $50 must be itemized on paper. The 10% cap applies, and a contract signed in your own home comes with 10 days to cancel. The contracts guide has the rest.
Who prices a Vanier move
One independent mover gets the request from Ottawa Moving Desk. Floors, stairwells and the building’s rules come up on the call, then a price.
Questions to ask the company
- What crew do you send for a third-floor walk-up, and which truck?
- Do you count the stairs as a separate charge, and from how many steps?
- Does the price change on the last days of the month?
- Can you work around my building's elevator booking, and what if it runs late?
Have this ready for the call
- Ask the landlord or property manager for the moving hours, the elevator booking and any deposit.
- Count the stairs from the street door to your unit, and the width of each hallway turn.
- Take down shelves and curtain rods, and list what stays in the unit.
- Check the street signs at both addresses the day before.
Questions people ask
Is a walk-up move more expensive than an elevator move?
Usually, because stairs slow the carry and add hours, and some Ottawa firms bill each flight. Say how many floors and steps there are, and whether the stairs are inside or outside, so the company can size the crew.
Can I book movers for the last day of the month?
You can, and the price may be higher. One Ottawa firm keeps its special rates for the middle of the month, the 5th to the 25th, and its prices can change on weekends too. Ask what the rate is on your date, and whether the minimum hours change too.
Does a Vanier move count as local?
Yes at the firms we checked. Vanier joined Ottawa in 2001 and lies well inside the 20 km circle around City Hall that OttawaBestMovers.ca uses for local moves, so expect the hourly rate plus one travel hour.
Is a short move from Vanier to Sandy Hill cheaper?
Sandy Hill is just across the Rideau River from Vanier. The distance is short, so the minimum hours and the one-hour travel charge often outweigh driving time. Ask how the company counts both, and where the clock starts and stops.
