What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Does the clock start at your yard or at my door, and how do you bill the drive out to Kanata?
  2. Q2For an upper unit in a stacked townhouse, how many movers do you send?
  3. Q3Can you quote from a video walkthrough and send the estimate in writing?
  4. Q4If the job runs past 3 hours on a street with no signs, where does the truck go?
  5. Q5What does your coverage pay if a piece is damaged on the way?

Before the visit

  • Check the signs on both streets. An unsigned street allows 3 hours, 7 am to 7 pm.
  • Stacked town or condo: get the moving hours and elevator rules from the property manager.
  • Measure the front door and the stair turn to the upper level.
  • Label each box with the floor it goes to at the new place.
  • In winter, clear the driveway and salt the steps the night before.

Where Kanata sits

Kanata is about 22 km west of downtown along Highway 417, the Queensway, on the far side of the NCC Greenbelt from Nepean. It was a city of its own until Ottawa amalgamated in 2001. For a move from the core, most of the drive is the 417.

The highway also cuts Kanata in two. North of it sit Kanata North and the business park on March Road. South of it run the Eagleson Road corridor and the Kanata South Business Park. A move from one half to the other still crosses the 417, so give the crew both postal codes.

The drive and the clock

Travel is billed on top of the hours at the door: a flat fee or one extra hour at the same rate. On a move from Centretown or the Glebe out to Kanata, that line matters. Ask where the clock starts and stops, and get the answer into the written estimate.

March Road and Eagleson Road also serve the two business parks, and the 417 is the commuter route into town. Ask the crew when they plan to load and when they expect to be on the highway. A loaded truck in rush-hour traffic is billed time.

The Canadian Tire Centre, where the Senators play, is at 1000 Palladium Drive. For an evening move nearby, check whether there is a game that night and plan the drive around it.

Stacked towns, townhomes, detached houses

Near the Kanata Town Centre, much of the housing is townhomes and stacked townhomes. Out toward Terry Fox Drive, the streets are mostly single-family houses. Each type sets the job differently:

  • Upper stacked unit. Every box and every piece of furniture goes up or down a flight by hand. Tell the crew whether the stairs are inside or outside, and where they turn.
  • Lower stacked unit or townhome. Measure the hallway and the turn at the top of the stairs before you count on a sectional or a box spring fitting.
  • Detached house. More rooms, a garage, a basement. Volume sets the crew and the truck size. Clear out what stays behind before the crew arrives.
  • Condo or rental building. The building sets the moving hours and the elevator booking. Ask the property manager for the moving form.

Where the truck parks

Within the posted rules, a moving truck needs no City permit. An unsigned street allows 3 hours between 7 am and 7 pm, and a house move can run longer, so plan on the driveway. The full parking and permit rules are on the Moving Desk home page.

Leaving Kanata

For a move to Barrhaven, Orléans or downtown, put both postal codes in the work order so the crew can estimate the drive. For a move out of the city, pick Long-distance move: those jobs are priced by volume or weight and distance.

Questions

01How much do movers charge for a move to Kanata?

Ottawa listings put two movers with a truck at about $110–130 an hour, with a 2–3 hour minimum and travel on top. A national mover’s own estimate for a 1-bedroom from the core to Kanata is $650–1,225. The company that calls quotes its own price.

02Is travel time to Kanata extra?

Usually. Ottawa movers bill travel as a flat fee or one extra hour at the hourly rate. From downtown it is about 22 km along the 417, so ask how the drive is counted.

03Can I book a move from Kanata North to Kanata South?

Yes. Pick Local move and give both postal codes. Highway 417 splits Kanata into a north half and a south half, and the crew plans the crossing from the two codes.

04I live in an upper stacked unit. What should I put in the request?

The number of steps, whether the stairs are inside or outside, and the tightest turn. Stairs set the crew size and the hours.

05Do you take requests for Stittsville?

Yes. Write Stittsville in the area field and describe the move. We pass it to a company that works there, and that company calls you.
