What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Is the drive along the 174 billed as a flat fee or as an extra hour?
  2. Q2For a 3- or 4-bedroom house with a basement, how many movers and what truck size do you plan?
  3. Q3Can you price two movers for a longer day against three for a shorter one?
  4. Q4Can someone on the crew speak French with me on the day?
  5. Q5Do you move the washer, dryer and fridge, and is hookup at the new place extra?

Before the visit

  • Empty the garage and basement of anything you plan to leave behind before the crew comes.
  • Keep the driveway clear of cars for the truck on moving day.
  • List the heavy pieces: washer and dryer, a second fridge, gym equipment, piano, patio set.
  • Disconnect and drain the washer, and defrost the fridge the day before.
  • From November to April, clear the driveway and steps the night before.

Where Orléans sits

Orléans is in Ottawa’s east end, on the Ottawa River, about 16 km from downtown. Gatineau is across the water. For a moving crew, the east end means one highway in and suburban streets at the end of it.

Highway 174

Highway 174 starts at The Split, its interchange with Highway 417 east of downtown, and runs through northern Orléans. Its Orléans interchanges are at Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard and Champlain Street. The divided road ends shortly after Trim Road, and the 174 continues to the city limit at Canaan Road.

Inside Orléans, the main roads are Innes Road, Brian Coburn Boulevard and Tenth Line Road. For a move to the south end, Hunt Club Road runs across the south of the city from the 417 near Ramsayville to Highway 416 and beyond. From Barrhaven or Kanata the drive is long, so ask how each company bills it before you compare quotes.

Houses with basements and garages

Orléans grew as a suburb of single-family houses. A house move here is usually a volume job: bedrooms, a basement, a garage. Volume decides the crew and the truck.

  • Basement. The heavy things often live here: a second fridge, gym equipment, the workbench. Name them in the work order.
  • Garage and shed. Tools, bikes, the snowblower, the patio set. Decide what stays before moving day. Sorting on the clock is billed time.
  • Two movers or three. A bigger crew costs more per hour and finishes sooner. Ask the company to price both ways and compare the totals.
  • Appliances. Drain the washer and defrost the fridge the day before. Ask whether the crew moves appliances and whether hookup is extra.

French on moving day

Orléans is bilingual: French is the mother tongue of about a third of residents. To deal with the crew in French, add “French” to the details of the work order. The company reads it before calling and can answer on the call.

Across the river

Quebec runs on its own moving calendar. July 1 is the traditional Moving Day there, and summer is peak season for movers across Canada. For a move that crosses to Gatineau near the end of June, send the work order early and keep a backup date.

A move out of Ontario goes in the form as Long-distance move. These jobs are priced by volume or weight and distance, so have a room-by-room list ready for the call.

Driveway, street and snow

If the house has a driveway, load from it. On the street the posted rules apply, and an unsigned street allows 3 hours between 7 am and 7 pm. From November 15 to April 1, overnight street parking is banned when the City forecasts 7 cm of snow or more, so on a two-day move the loaded truck needs a driveway or a lot for that night.

What to write in the work order

Give both postal codes, the number of bedrooms, and what sits in the basement and the garage. Name the heavy pieces. Say whether the date can move by a day or two. The crew uses this to plan the truck and the team before it calls you.

Questions

01How much does a move to Orléans cost?

Ottawa listings put two movers with a truck at about $110–130 an hour, with a 2–3 hour minimum plus travel. One national mover estimates a 1-bedroom move from the core to Orléans at $840–1,370. A family house takes more hours or a bigger crew.

02Which route do movers take to Orléans?

Highway 174 runs from The Split, its interchange with Highway 417, through northern Orléans, with interchanges at Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard and Champlain Street. Inside Orléans, the main roads are Innes Road, Brian Coburn Boulevard and Tenth Line Road.

03Can I ask for a French-speaking crew?

Write it in the details of the work order. The company that receives your request reads the note and can tell you on the call who will come.

04I am moving from Orléans to Gatineau or Montreal. Which service do I pick?

Pick Long-distance move and give both cities. These moves are usually priced by volume or weight and distance. Around July 1, Quebec’s traditional Moving Day, send the request early.

05Should I empty the fridge and drain the washer before the move?

Yes. Defrost and dry the fridge the day before, and disconnect and drain the washer so it travels empty. Ask the company whether its crew moves appliances and whether hookup at the new place costs extra.
