What Gloucester covers
Gloucester began as Township B in 1792. Braddish Billings settled near what is now Billings Bridge. The township became a city in 1981 and joined the new City of Ottawa in 2001. Wikipedia counts 150,012 residents in the 2021 census.
The name now covers a wide band of east and south Ottawa. Neighbourhoods on its list include Cyrville-Carson Grove, Beacon Hill North and South, Blackburn Hamlet, Chapel Hill, Chateau Neuf, Convent Glen, Blossom Park, Leitrim-Findlay Creek, Riverside South and a large rural area of 195 km². South Keys, Hunt Club and Greenboro are among its commercial and residential centres.
Old streets and new ones
Growth did not arrive evenly. Blackburn Hamlet had 8,173 residents in 2021 against 8,527 in 2006. Leitrim-Findlay Creek grew from 1,333 to 14,089 over the same period, and Riverside South from 6,844 to 12,582. Blackburn Hamlet has barely changed, while Findlay Creek and Riverside South have added most of their homes in recent years.
For a mover the difference is the age of the housing at each end. Describe both addresses: the street, the type of home, the stairs and where the truck can stand.
The distance rule matters here
Gloucester is large, and moves from its far corners may fall on either side of a company’s local radius. OttawaBestMovers.ca bills a flat travel hour inside its 20 km circle around City Hall and adds travel time once a pickup or drop-off falls outside it. Move-Ottawa Movers bills one flat hour, and a second one past 60 km from its office.
A rural address, or a move from far south Gloucester to the west end, can cross those lines. Ask which one your move falls in and get it on the estimate. See local moving for how a standard job is built.
Prices for a Gloucester move
At OttawaBestMovers.ca a two-mover crew with a 20 ft truck starts at $129 an hour, a three-mover crew on a 26 ft truck at $175, with a flat travel hour added. Move-Ottawa Movers lists $150 an hour for two movers with a 17 ft truck, with a 3.5-hour minimum and an hour of travel, and $30 per flight of seven stairs. First Rate Movers gives $1,645 to $2,120 as a typical local cost for a 3-bedroom house. These come from different firms, so line them up by what each includes. Wider ranges are on moving cost in Ottawa.
East of the core
Wikipedia lists Collège La Cité as the only post-secondary institution in Gloucester, and the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est has its headquarters there. Ask for a French-speaking caller in the request. The east end also connects to Orléans, which has its own page, and to Vanier toward the core.
Going farther
A move from Gloucester to Gatineau or Montréal is a different job. Read Ottawa to Gatineau for the river crossing, or long-distance moving for pricing by volume and distance.
Estimates and what goes in writing
OttawaBestMovers.ca says a written binding estimate needs an on-site estimate. Ask for the crew size, hours, truck size and travel line in the document. Ontario.ca recommends three written estimates or more, and the province caps the bill at the written estimate plus 10%, extras you approve aside. Source: Hiring a mover.
Who phones you
Ottawa Moving Desk passes a Gloucester move to a single independent company. That company asks which part of Gloucester, how many steps and which date, and quotes in its own name.
Questions to ask the company
- Is my address inside your local radius, or is extra travel added?
- For a rural lot with a long gravel lane, what truck size will you send?
- My new home in a recent subdivision has a possession time. What if it shifts?
- Do you bill stairs per flight or inside the hourly rate?
- Can the crew speak French if my building manager or neighbours do?
Have this ready for the call
- Give the full postal code of both addresses; Gloucester is large and the drive changes the bill.
- For rural lots, check the lane in spring thaw and tell the crew if it softens.
- Ask the property manager or builder for the move-in rules and hours.
- Reserve the visitor spots or clear the driveway for the truck.
- Set aside valuables, documents and medication to travel with you.
Questions people ask
Does Gloucester include Orléans?
Wikipedia’s Gloucester list includes Orleans Village and Orleans Wood, though most people treat Orléans as its own east-end community, and this site has a separate Orléans page. Give the street and the postal code; the company sizes the crew and the drive from them.
Are the Findlay Creek moves different from older Gloucester?
Leitrim-Findlay Creek went from 1,333 residents in 2006 to 14,089 in 2021, so many homes are recent. Blackburn Hamlet went from 8,527 residents in 2006 to 8,173 in 2021, so its housing is older. Describe the lot and the stairs for each address.
How is a rural Gloucester address treated?
Wikipedia lists rural Gloucester at 195 km², so some addresses are far from City Hall. OttawaBestMovers.ca adds travel time beyond 20 km. Move-Ottawa Movers adds a second hour at 60 km or more from its office. Ask the company how it counts the distance.
Is a mid-month move cheaper?
OttawaBestMovers.ca holds its special prices for the 5th through the 25th; weekends, month-end and high season can cost more. Other firms raise rates on peak days too. If your date can move, say so in the request and ask the company how the day changes the rate.
Does the move need a flat quote?
A flat price needs an on-site look. OttawaBestMovers.ca says a written binding estimate requires an on-site estimate. If a company gives only a phone price, ask whether it is an estimate or a fixed price and have the answer in writing.
