In short
- Availability depends on crew schedules, truck capacity and access, says one Ottawa firm: a move on the day itself is sometimes possible.
- An Ottawa mover's guide ranks the final weekend of a month, and the opening weekend of the next, as the hardest to book.
- One firm's short-notice page lists $119–$179 an hour for two movers and a truck, with a 2-hour minimum and a one-time operations fee.
- Deposit terms vary: one firm takes none on local moves, another keeps the deposit when you cancel inside two weeks.
- Ontario rules still apply: a written contract over $50, and a final bill within 10% of the written estimate.

What short notice means in Ottawa
A last-minute move is a booking days or hours ahead. Typical triggers are a closing that moved up, a lease that ended early or a job that starts in another city. The answer turns on whether a crew and a truck are free. Cactus Moving states that a move on the day itself is sometimes possible and depends on crew schedules, truck capacity and access at both ends.
The request you send decides how fast a company can answer. Send both addresses with floors, the size of the home, the deadline and anything heavy. A company that has to ask five questions loses the hour you need.
When the calendar works against you
Demand is uneven. Men In Trucks Moving sees the closing weekend of a month and the opening weekend of the next go first, and September 1 tighter still in the student neighbourhoods. At OttawaBestMovers.ca the special-price window covers the 5th through the 25th; outside it, and on weekends and in high season, the price can change.
If your date is flexible by a day or two, move it to a weekday inside the 5th–25th window. If not, say so in the request: a fixed deadline lets a company decide fast. The month-by-month guide lists the calendar, and July 1 moving day covers the busiest date for moves across the river.
What short-notice work costs
Prices stay hourly. Cactus Moving prints $119–$179 an hour for two movers and a 16 ft truck, $179–$219 for three with a 26 ft truck and $229–$269 for four, each with a 2-hour minimum and a one-time operations fee. Ottawa firms with fixed cards list $129–$150 for two movers with a truck, so ask whether a short-notice slot adds a premium.
Cactus also counts its own invoices: a middle 1-bedroom move at $713 over 13 moves, a 2-bedroom at $897 over 11, tax in. Treat small counts as a rough check. See movers’ hourly rates for rate cards by crew size.
Deposits, holds and cancellation
Deposit rules differ. Cactus Moving takes no deposit on local moves and holds a date free while you finalize keys and elevator bookings. Ottawa Pro Movers refunds a deposit when you cancel 15 days before the date and keeps it inside two weeks. For a move days away, the deposit decides what you lose if the key date shifts. Ask before you pay.
Contract rules that still apply
Short notice leaves Ontario’s rules in force. Any moving contract above $50 goes on paper, with the mover’s name and address, the services, every price, the total, the dates and how you pay. A signed estimate holds within 10%, and a contract made in person at your home comes with a 10-day cooling-off period. Read moving contracts in Ontario and the quote checklist.
Make the day shorter
Pack the priority rooms first: bedrooms, kitchen basics, anything for work. Cactus Moving says its crews can pack priority rooms first and fragile items if crews and materials are available, and that night moves are possible depending on availability and building rules. If packing is the gap, see packing services. If you only need hands on a truck you rented, see moving help.
Parking matters more when time is short. Under the City’s by-law a truck gets 3 hours on an unsigned street between 7 am and 7 pm, and it must keep clear of corners and hydrants. Local moving covers the rest of the day.
Who answers a rush request
Ottawa Moving Desk passes the rush request to one independent mover. Its office calls with a yes or a no for your date, and a price if the answer is yes.
Questions to ask the company
- Can you confirm a crew and a truck for my date today, and when would the arrival window start?
- Is there a deposit, and what do I lose if the date moves?
- Will you put the rate, minimum and any short-notice fee in writing before the crew comes?
- If we run out of time, what happens to the items still in the old place?
- Can the crew pack the priority rooms if I have not finished?
Have this ready for the call
- The hard deadline: key handover time, lease end or closing, and what happens if the move slips.
- Both addresses, floors and elevator or stair details.
- A short list of what moves first: beds, kitchen basics, work equipment, medication.
- Parking plan at both ends: signs on the street, a hydrant nearby, space for a truck.
Questions people ask
Can a mover come on the day I call in Ottawa?
Sometimes. Cactus Moving says moves on the day itself depend on crew schedules, truck capacity and access at both addresses, and that the faster it can confirm addresses, inventory and parking, the better the odds. Send everything in the first message and keep the phone close.
Why is the end of the month harder to book?
Leases and closings cluster there. Men In Trucks Moving puts month-end weekends at the top of its hard-to-book list, and First Rate Movers wants four to six weeks of notice for those dates. A weekday in mid-month is easier.
Do I pay a deposit on a short-notice move?
It depends on the firm. Cactus Moving takes no deposit on local moves. Ottawa Pro Movers refunds a deposit if you cancel 15 days ahead and keeps it if you cancel inside two weeks. A booking days away is already inside that window, so ask what the deposit covers.
