Why the sources disagree
A starting price covers the smallest load a truck size fits. A flat range covers a set of typical homes. An average mixes every move a site has seen, with and without packing. A quote for your own inventory is still the number that counts. The role of the table is to show whether a quote falls far outside the ranges, high or low.
What moves the total
- Load. The volume decides the truck size and the crew size.
- Distance. Toronto sits about 449 km away and Montréal about 198 km, according to MoveAdvisor.
- Access. Stairs, elevators, a long carry and a narrow driveway add crew time at both ends.
- Services. Packing, materials, disassembly and storage between dates are separate lines. Local hourly examples are in moving cost in Ottawa and movers’ hourly rates.
- Date. Move-Ottawa warns of higher rates in peak periods, weekends and Fridays ahead of a long weekend among them. MoveAdvisor flags summer as busy.
Comparing a flat price with an hourly price
A flat price states the total for the listed load. Move-Ottawa describes a written binding estimate as a flat price, as opposed to an hourly estimate, and says it needs an on-site visit. An hourly price states a rate, a minimum and a travel rule. Put every quote on one base: same truck, same crew, same inventory, same dates, tax counted the same way.
Ontario rules that touch the price
Ontario asks for at least three written estimates from different companies, and any moving contract over $50 has to be on paper with every price itemized. Once signed, the estimate holds within 10%; supplies or services beyond it need your consent. Holding your goods to force a bigger payment is against the rules. If you pay under pressure, Ontario advises writing “paid under protest” on the invoice. See moving contracts in Ontario.
Tax treatment
The Canada Revenue Agency lets you claim moving expenses on line 21900 when the new home is at least 40 kilometres closer, by the shortest public route, to a new workplace or full-time school. Eligible items include transportation and storage of household goods, travel and up to 15 days of temporary living expenses. Ask a tax professional about your case.
A written quote should include
The route, both addresses, the truck and crew, the price type, the total and the tax, the dates, the insurance terms and the payment terms. The moving quote checklist gives the full list, and the long-distance moving page explains the process.
Who quotes your route
Ottawa Moving Desk hands a route request to a single mover, and that firm prices your distance and your load. Send yours with the form on this page.
Questions to ask the company
- Does the total include the truck, the crew, fuel, tolls and the drive?
- What is the price type: binding, non-binding or capped hourly?
- Which lines are extra: packing, materials, stairs, assembly, storage between dates?
- What is the deposit and the cancellation rule?
- Is HST added to the quote, or already included?
Have this ready for the call
- Put the same inventory and the same dates into every request so the quotes compare.
- Decide what you pack yourself and what the crew packs.
- Photograph the rooms and the access at both addresses.
- Open a document to hold the three written quotes side by side.
Questions people ask
Why is Ottawa to Toronto more expensive than Ottawa to Montréal?
The road is longer. MoveAdvisor gives 449 km to Toronto and 198 km to Montréal. Ottawa Pro Movers lists $2,150–3,500 against $1,500–2,400, and Move-Ottawa starts at $2,099 against $1,450. MoveAdvisor’s averages show the reverse, which is why you compare written quotes.
Which source should I believe when the ranges differ?
Each one measures something else: Ottawa Pro Movers prints flat ranges, Move-Ottawa prints starting prices by truck and MoveAdvisor averages past moves. Use them only to judge whether a written quote sits in a sensible zone.
What does the truck size change?
Move-Ottawa shows it in dollars. A 17-foot box starts at $1,450 for Montréal, a 24-foot box at $2,350. A larger home needs the larger box. Ask the company which size its quote assumes.
How do I compare a flat price with an hourly price?
Put both on the same list: load, crew, truck, travel, stairs, materials and tax. A flat price fixes the total for the listed load. An hourly price grows with the time. Ask the hourly company for a cap in writing.
What happens to the price if I add stairs or packing at the last minute?
Added packing or materials count as extra services, and Ontario lets those lift the bill past the 10% cap only with your agreement. Ask the company to confirm each addition on paper.
