Where Stittsville sits
Stittsville is a suburban community in the former Goulbourn Township, immediately southwest of Kanata and about 20 km west of downtown Ottawa. The urban part is the Stittsville ward, which had 40,889 residents in the 2021 census. Jackson Stitt was the first postmaster in 1854, which gave the village its name.
The first settlement centred on Carp Road and Hazeldean Road, today called Old Stittsville. The Carleton County Fire of 1870 destroyed most of the village, and it was rebuilt around the railway. The last passenger train ran on 14 January 1990, and the line is now part of the Trans Canada Trail along Abbott Street East.
Newer homes, easy access
One Ottawa firm describes Jackson Trails, Fairwinds and the Fernbank and Hazeldean corridor as nearly all newer construction: three- and four-bedroom single-family homes with attached garages and wide driveways. For a mover that means a large truck can usually reach the door, which keeps carry time short.
The original village around Carp Road and Hazeldean Road, now called Old Stittsville, is a different kind of move. If you live there, describe the lot and the street in the request.
The drive decides the price
The firm’s Stittsville page puts the trip from downtown at 25 to 35 minutes off-peak and over 50 at rush hour. It starts Stittsville crews at 7:30 to 8:00 am to stay ahead of the morning traffic on Hazeldean and Stittsville Main. It adds a one-hour travel fee for the drive from its depot on top of the hourly rate, so the written estimate has to name the travel line.
Another Ottawa firm counts a local move as one within 20 km of City Hall and bills one hour of travel. Stittsville sits right at that line. Ask where the clock starts and ends, and get it in writing.
Possession day
Many Stittsville moves end at a new build. The builder fixes the possession time, and it can slip by a few hours. A truck loaded at the old house cannot unload into an empty lot, so ask these things early:
- What happens to the crew and the hours if possession shifts?
- Can the load wait on the truck, or go to storage by the week?
- Who pays for the wait?
The firm lists climate-controlled containerized storage for such gaps. A different company may not. Compare how each handles it, then see local moving for the standard job and last-minute movers when the date moves overnight.
Estimates by house size
On the Stittsville page, the firm gives 5 to 6 hours ($750–900) for a three-bedroom house and 6 to 8 hours ($900–1,200) for a multi-storey four-bedroom, often with a third mover at $40 an hour more. Treat them as one company’s figures. Moving cost in Ottawa shows ranges from several firms.
Moving on from Stittsville
A downsizing couple may head to a condo in Kanata; a family may go to Barrhaven. For the GTA or Montréal, pick Long-distance move; see long-distance moving. The seniors moving page covers pacing for downsizers.
Who calls about possession day
We send a Stittsville request to one independent mover. It asks about the closing date, the possession time and the stairs before it prices the move.
Questions to ask the company
- Is the drive from your yard to Stittsville billed, and where does the clock start?
- My possession time is 11 am but the builder may shift it. What happens to the crew and the price?
- If the new house is unavailable, can the truck hold the load or go to storage, and what does that cost?
- Do you send a third mover for a multi-storey house, and at what rate?
- When do you plan to arrive, given the Hazeldean and Stittsville Main morning traffic?
Have this ready for the call
- Get the possession time and the builder's rules for moving in from the sales office or lawyer.
- Confirm the hydro, water and gas are on at the new home on possession day.
- Reserve the garage or a clear driveway at the old home for the truck ramp.
- Write down the stairs: how many flights, where they turn.
- Plan a gap day or storage if the closing dates of the sale and the purchase are different.
Questions people ask
How far is Stittsville from downtown Ottawa?
About 20 km west, per Wikipedia. Off-peak the drive is roughly 25 to 35 minutes on one Ottawa firm’s page and over 50 minutes at rush hour. On an hourly job that time is billed unless the company states otherwise, so ask how it counts the drive.
What is Old Stittsville?
The original village, centred on Carp Road and Hazeldean Road, founded in 1854. The newer areas such as Jackson Trails and Fairwinds sit around it. Tell the company which part you are in so it can plan the truck.
Do I need a crew on possession day or the day before?
Possession times are set by the builder and can slip by hours. Ask the company whether it can hold a backup slot and how it bills waiting. Some Ottawa movers offer containerized storage for the gap between closings.
Can a mover disconnect the washer and dryer?
Many crews disconnect and reconnect a washer, dryer or fridge on the load side, and one Ottawa firm says it refers certified gas work out. Gas work belongs to a qualified gas technician. Mention a gas dryer or range in the request.
Is a third mover worth it in a new 4-bedroom?
On a multi-storey house with heavy furniture, the extra mover adds $40 an hour on one firm’s page and can shorten the day. Ask the company to compare the two crews by total hours and total price.
