What Nepean covers

Nepean was an independent city from 1978 until amalgamation in 2001, and the name still stands for the west-central part of Ottawa. Wikipedia counts 186,593 residents in the 2021 census. The township hall once stood in Westboro, and the centre later moved to Bells Corners. In the 1950s and 1960s the urban area grew into previously rural areas at Centrepointe and Barrhaven.

For a mover that history is a map of housing eras. Bells Corners, Crystal Beach and the streets around them are older. Centrepointe is a cluster of towers and townhouses beside the old Nepean city hall at Ben Franklin Place. Merivale Road is the retail spine, with big-box stores and the Colonnade Road business park to its west. Algonquin College’s main campus sits on the Woodroffe side.

The 1960s house

One Ottawa firm describes much of Bells Corners, Crystal Beach, City View and Arlington Woods as late-1950s to 1970s construction: split levels, narrow interior stairs and basements reached through one tight doorway. Mature trees and single-car driveways come with it.

That changes the job:

  • The truck. Where a 26-foot truck cannot get close, a smaller truck and a shuttle run add trips, and trips add hours.
  • The awkward pieces. A sectional, treadmill, chest freezer or safe may not clear a basement door. Say so in the request.

Condos around Centrepointe and Baseline

Towers near Centrepointe, Baseline and College Square run their own rules. Elevator slots are booked, the lobby may be closed to moving at certain hours, and property management can ask for a certificate of insurance before the crew starts. The same firm lists that paperwork as part of its service. Ask any company that calls whether it files the certificate and whether that costs extra.

Plan the slot first, then the crew: a two-hour elevator window can decide the number of movers. For towers read condo moving, and for flats in general see apartment moving.

What drives the bill

The rate is per hour for a crew and a truck. One Ottawa firm’s Nepean page lists $150, $195, $245 and $325 an hour for two, three, four and five movers, with a one-hour travel fee from its depot. OttawaBestMovers.ca starts at $119 for labour-only help and $129 for a pair with a 20 ft truck, adding an hour of travel to local moves. Both are single firms’ figures. On the first page, month-end, weekends and May to September cost more.

The home-size figure in the table is that firm’s own estimate. For city-wide ranges see moving cost in Ottawa.

Traffic on Merivale and Baseline

Merivale and Baseline are Nepean’s working arteries. The loaded leg is billed time, so ask the company when it will drive. A move from Nepean to the east end crosses the Queensway or the Greenbelt roads; one to the south ends in Barrhaven, the shortest hop from many Nepean streets. A move west goes to Kanata.

Timing in Nepean

Student turnover around Algonquin College fills calendars near 1 May and 1 September, and month-end Saturdays fill everywhere. Book three or four weeks ahead for those dates. Before a winter move, clear and salt the driveway the night before.

Written quote and the Ontario rules

The province does not license moving companies, Ontario.ca says, so three written estimates are its first advice. A consumer contract over $50 goes on paper with each price listed, and the bill may run at most 10% past the estimate unless you approve extra supplies or services. Ask for those lines before the day.

Who calls about Nepean

We send the request to one independent Ottawa mover. Its office asks about the stairs, the driveway and the date, then names its price.

Questions to ask the company

  1. My street has a single-car driveway and mature trees. Which truck size will you send, and is a shuttle run billed?
  2. How is the one-hour travel charge shown on the written estimate?
  3. My building needs a certificate of insurance. Do you file it, and is that free?
  4. The date is near the end of the month. Does the hourly rate change?
  5. What do you do with a sectional that will not clear the basement doorway?

Have this ready for the call

  • Measure the basement doorway and the turn of the stairs on split-level homes.
  • Ask property management for the move-in form, the elevator slot and the insurance wording.
  • List the heavy pieces: treadmill, chest freezer, safe, sectional.
  • Say if there is a driveway, a visitor lot or a loading zone.
  • Have both postal codes ready, even when the second address is in Barrhaven.

Questions people ask

Where does Nepean start and end?

Nepean was a separate city until 2001 and the name is still used for the west-central part of Ottawa, from Bells Corners and Crystal Beach to Centrepointe and Merivale. Put the street and postal code in the request so the crew prices the right address.

Are Algonquin College moves handled the same way?

Student moves are small: a studio or one-bedroom, often a two-mover crew and a small truck. Turnover peaks around 1 May and 1 September, so ask for a date a few weeks out. Mention the residence or building and the floor in the request.

My Centrepointe condo has an elevator. What does the mover need from me?

Ask management for the elevator booking, the pads and any damage deposit, and whether a certificate of insurance is required. One Ottawa firm says it files that certificate for its own jobs. Tell the company that calls which building and which unit.

Can a mover take down a bed or a crib at my Nepean house?

Basic disassembly of beds and tables is usually part of the hourly rate, and reassembly may be billed per piece at some Ottawa firms. Ask the company how it treats each item and have the screws bagged in advance so the crew does not search for them.

Which hours should a truck avoid on Merivale Road?

One Ottawa firm avoids 7 to 9 am and 4 to 6 pm on Merivale, because an hour in traffic on an hourly job is billed time. Ask the company that calls which window it plans for the loaded drive.
